Special TMT First 2011 Edition: Why Do I Blog?

For the last few months I have wondered to myself, what is the point of blogging? Why do I post pictures and personal stories on the web for ALL in the world to see? Why do I do it so frequently?

I came up with a few answers on my own, you know the typical ones:
~I do it for family and friends (especially Grandparents) to see Ty and our family grow even though they are far away.
~I do it to remember certain events myself so I can go back and figure out when things happened.
~I do it for the comments (scratch that) all though I love the comments, they aren't a real reason to blog for me.
~I do it for the sake of keeping a family journal.

After thinking of these reasons, and more that escape me right now, I wondered if blogging will ever go out of fashion. Maybe one day technology will be so stinking awesome (wait, isn't it all ready?) that something new and ingenious will take the blogging world by storm and put it to shame, will I still blog then? Really though, why do I do it?

The other morning I was reading the Book of Mormon with Ty, in Jacob Chapter 4. This is what I read,

"1 Now behold, it came to pass that I, Jacob, having ministered much unto my people in word, (and I cannot write but a little of my words, because of the difficulty of engraving our words upon plates) and we know that the things which we write upon plates must remain; (How difficult is blogging for me, really it' not)

2 But whatsoever things we write upon anything save it be upon plates must perish and vanish away; (a paper journal can be misplaced, ruined or even destroyed. Believe me I know about this first hand. Pretty sure the web is a permanent place to keep a journal, plus I can add pictures and video so easily!) but we can write a few words upon plates, which will give our children, and also our beloved brethren, a small degree of knowledge concerning us, or concerning their fathers—

3 Now in this thing we do rejoice; and we labor diligently to engraven these words upon plates, hoping that our beloved brethren and our children will receive them with thankful hearts, and look upon them that they may learn with joy and not with sorrow, neither with contempt, concerning their first parents.

4 For, for this intent have we written these things, that they may know that we knew of Christ...
So there you have it, why do I blog? So that you my "brethren", my children and grandchildren and all my posterity will know me, they will know Matt, they will know any one else that I blog about (Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents and Friends) they will know what we like/liked to do (like blogging!), what everyday life was for us, how we raised them, and most importantly that we knew of Christ, that we tried to "Let [our] lights so shine before men, that they may see [our] good works, and glorify [our] Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:16 everyday. That we had our ups and downs, ebbs and flows and that life isn't perfect but through it all we continue/continued to endure to the end.

Hopefully one day, in the distant future my posterity will look at this blog and learn something that will help them in their life, maybe that something will be:
that I wasn't a great cook at first (hint hint I THINK I am getting better)
OR that even though sewing is tough keep at it and it will be easier once you realize that sewing is for RIGHT HANDED PEOPLE so conform to the right handed ways and it will come quicker
OR that new things like Triathlons and Community Theater takes time but it's pretty fun and worth at least one try
OR that working full time, while attending school full time, WHILE having a family at home is so rough and half the time you don't know how you'll make it through but in the end, turns out it's doable (at least that is what I keep telling myself one more semester!)
OR that their ancestors were completely crazy but totally awesome at the same time
OR that it's cute to have a big head and/or crooked ears, it comes from every direction in the family (Sorry!)
OR that raising kids is super hard but absolutely worth it

but mostly I hope that they learn of the knowledge that I have that Jesus Christ died for us, that he was resurrected, and that he was the perfect example that they should follow, because that's who I am trying to follow. Also, that because of him and the perfect plan that has been set forth by our Father in Heaven we can all live with them and our families in Heaven again. Hopefully that knowledge will spark or strengthen them to be a better person and to keep on keepin' on because really, isn't that what life (or what my blogging) should be all about?

Great insight Mickie, and I love all your reasons behind your blogging. Your love for God, your husband, your son and daughter, and all your family and friends always shines through your blog posts and I truly enjoy reading them. Happy New Year cuz!

How funny, Denali and I just read that chapter a couple weeks ago and some of my thoughts on it were similar!

To preserve your thoughts further, I don't know if you've looked into getting your blog printed... But I did it last year and have my book for this year 95% done. blurb.com is the place to go! (Didn't Kristin do something like this too?) Anyway, I'm loving it, plus I add all sorts of things to the book (pictures, scans of documents, private thoughts etc.) that I don't want online for everyone to see but that I don't mind my family reading/seeing. Plus, that way I actually print off my digital photos instead of leaving them on a computer to rot and die! :)

You're a great blogger! love reading everything!!

I enjoy and look forward to your blogs when you write them. I check everyday. Excellent advice. However, as a grandparent a picture is worth a thousand words. I loved the blog below this one. Thanks so much for that post. I have seen my grandson grow up before my eyes because of your posts.

Your blog is one of my favorites and it's not like I don't see you all the time so it must be something nice about seeing something recorded. I totally agree

I agree! You listed such great reasons to keep a blog! I've had a few friends lately stop blogging because they felt pressured to create the illusion of perfection, like they had to create a false reality. But I think you keep things pretty real, and I love it! (I try to also, I mean, it's rare that I post a pic taken in my house, and it's actually clean, hahaha).
