Alas, he has thrown in the towel

Poor Matt, he pulled his hamstring last Saturday playing football and has been feverishly trying to nurse it back to health for his all time favorite holiday and it's oh so wonderful activities. But as I stated before he has thrown in the towel. He realized it yesterday when he was trying to "jog" to make it to across the street to the train and he couldn't bend his knees or legs to get going quickly enough. While walking he is fine but anything passed that? Pain!

He has asked me a few times..... "Mick, (in a sad, rejected sounding voice) what do you think I should do Thanksgiving morning since I wont be playing football?" I always tell him "It's okay you're just getting older and you need to take better care of your body." Then I get the I'M GETTING OLDER LOOK along with a "Mick" Man I'll have to take a picture when he says Mick that way. Most of the family knows exactly what I am talking about. He strains his neck forward, cocks his head to the side, widens his eyes with a half serious, half smiling mouth. Its great, makes me laugh just thinking about it.

I still say he should throw some IcyHot on it tonight, followed by a good R.I.C.E (Rest Ice Compress Elevate) then wrap it really well in the morning coupled with a good dose of Ibuprofen and have at it. We'll see what he decides either or he'll be in pain (Emotional or Physical)

We are going to see "Four Christmases" tomorrow at the 5 or 6 o'clock showing (The District) followed by an intense game of bowling, then back home for Pumpkin Pie (with the appropriate type of whipped topping Matt informed me), Apple Pie (with Vanilla Ice cream) and Rich Heath bar Cheesecake (with a big glass of milk because it really is rich) If anyone would like to join us! :)

Have a Happy Turkey Day tomorrow!
Love to all!
(just like Holly says at the end of all her posts)

Kickin butt and takin names

First of all I don't want to talk about what happened on Saturday.... ridiculous Max. I feel bad for him more then anything.

Moving on I wanted to say that I am SO THANKFUL for my high school English teacher Mrs. Adriann Hillman. She was the best English teacher ever and I strongly suggest that anyone living back home takes her as a teacher! I say that because in all the college English classes I have ever had things that I thought people should just know from high school come up all the time. For example, how to site something properly in a paper, duh its the authors last name and the year the article was written. NOPE not very many people know that of the top of their heads, Weird! Anyways the reason I bring this up is I spent about 3 hours writing this review that our teacher gave our class 2 weeks to write and I came out with one of the best grades in the class?! HA HA thanks Mrs. Hillman! I can kick butt and take names with as little time involved as possible. You all know how much of that I have these days :) Go Mrs. Hillman you are the BEST!

Disclaimer: I am on my way to class and thought I would quickly write this blog so if there are errors don't let that reflect poorly on Mrs. Hillman's teaching but it's my fault for not proof reading.

Christmas Tree??

I am wearing a green sweater and tan dress pants I feel like a Christmas tree... Suzanne and I went last night and bought all the wood, nails, and wire, needed for our Christmas Tree Craft that we are making this weekend maybe it was inspiration!? After we bought it all we traced all the pieces out on the boards. Matt said that he would work on cutting everything tonight so we can paint it all tomorrow morning. What a nice husband. It's an advent calender so we'll need to for sure have it ready by the 1st! We'll have to show you pictures when we are working on them tomorrow :) I am excited

Black Friday Ads

I found this webiste if anyone is interested

http://www.blackfriday.info/sales/

Its pretty organized. Check it out if you are one of those crazies that go for it the day after thanksgiving.

As excited as a kid in a candy store!

As some of you know earlier this year some co-workers of mine showed me how to do "glitter toes". I loved it so much because I never painted my toes and didn't even own finger nail polish. This glitter stayed perfectly glittery for months before I had to file it off and do it again. Some of you I have done before and if you ever need me to do it again let me know and I'll have my stuff with me. ANYWAYS I do my Aunt Sharon's toes about once every month and a half or so and as her little thank you to me she bought me THIS!
LOOK AT THAT!!! ALL THOSE COLORS! Before this I only had about 6 colors now I have TONS and I get to start mixing them as well... a little white or silver with aquamarine ohhh I am excited. Any test cases? What am I thankful for? Glittery toes for sure I have had 4 colors since May... that's how long they stay on my toesies :)

Pretty litle pearl

If you havent heard of the website propertyroom.com you should check it out... well maybe not. I was looking at it one day and for the first time in my life decided "heck why not bid on something" I was wearing pearls that day and so I thought "hmmm a nice pearl ring eh?" The opening bid was a dollar so I bet 4 (you have to vote in predetermined increments) and "what I won?" It was 4 dollars plus 10 dollars shipping and handling. Apparently its valued at $80-129 so I guess i got a good deal? Talk about an impulse buy yikes! My first one ever... I don't really like jewelry what was I thinking? Needless to say I haven't checked out the website lately no more impulse buys for me :)

Also last weekend I started playing the piano so Jason joined me then wanted to dance to dance to what I was playing to, so then it was just Sierra and I. She got disinterested then just wanted to crawl on the piano when she started trying to get on top of the keys I had to say enough.

A positive coach

As most of you know I am majoring in Exercise and Sport Science, specifically Physical Education Teaching Education. I have had to write TONS of papers and do loads of research about teaching and coaching. I thoroughly enjoy it all. Something I came across this evening while doing my 5 hours of straight homework (not even kidding) was the Positive Coaching Alliance. I am pretty sure these are the reasons why I like Bronco Mendenhall, coach of the BYU Cougars Football team so much he really uses this as a guideline to his coaching. Some day when I am a soccer mom, a coach, or both I hope to remember this as well. As part of their program they teach this:

THE DOUBLE-GOAL COACH
A Positive Coach is a "Double-Goal Coach."
A win-at-all-cost coach has only one goal: to win. He or she is concerned primarily with teaching skills and developing strategy designed to win games.

A Positive Coach also wants to win but has a second goal: to help players develop positive character traits, so they can be successful in life. Winning is important, but the second goal, helping players learn "life lessons," is more important. A Positive Coach puts players first.

JOB DESCRIPTION
There are three major elements to the "job description" of a Positive Coach.
A Positive Coach:

REDEFINES "WINNER"
A Positive Coach helps players redefine what it means to be a winner by focusing on mastery rather than score. S/he sees victory as a by-product of the pursuit of excellence. S/he focuses on effort rather than outcome and on learning rather than comparison to others. S/he recognizes that mistakes are an important and inevitable part of learning and fosters an environment in which players don't fear making mistakes. While not ignoring the teaching opportunities that mistakes present, s/he teaches players that a key to success is how one responds to mistakes. S/he sets standards of continuous improvement for him/herself and the players. S/he encourages the players, whatever their level of ability, to strive to become the best players, and people, they can be.
S/he teaches players that a winner is someone who makes maximum effort, continues to learn and improve, and doesn’t let mistakes (or fear of mistakes) stop them.

FILLS PLAYERS' EMOTIONAL TANKS
A Positive Coach is a positive motivator who refuses to motivate through fear, intimidation, or shame. S/he recognizes that every player has an "Emotional Tank" like the gas tank of a car. Just as a car with an empty gas tank can’t go very far, a player with an empty emotional tank doesn't have the energy to do his/her best. A Positive Coach understands that compliments, praise, and positive recognition fill Emotional Tanks. S/he understands the importance of giving truthful and specific feedback and resists the temptation to give praise that is not warranted. When correction is necessary, a Positive Coach communicates criticism to players in ways that don't undermine their sense of self-worth. A Positive Coach strives to achieve a 5:1 "Plus/Minus Ratio" of praise to correction.
A Positive Coach establishes order and maintains discipline in a positive manner. S/he listens to players and involves them in decisions that affect the team. S/he works to remain positive even when things aren't going well. S/he recognizes that it is often when things go wrong that a coach can have the most lasting impact and can teach the most important lessons. Even when facing adversity, s/he refuses to demean him/herself, the players, or the environment. S/he always treats athletes with respect, regardless of how well they perform.

HONORS THE GAME
A Positive Coach feels an obligation to the sport and teaches the players to Honor the Game. "Honoring the Game" means getting to the ROOTS of the matter, where ROOTS stands for respect for:
Rules: A Positive Coach upholds the spirit, as well as the letter, of its rules.
Opponents: A Positive Coach respects opponents, recognizing that a worthy opponent will push the athletes to do their best.
Officials: A Positive Coach understands the important role that officials play and shows them respect, even when s/he disagrees with their calls.
Teammates: A Positive Coach encourages players to make a commitment to each other and to encourage one another on and off the field. S/he values the rich tradition of the sport and feels privileged to participate.
Self: A Positive Coach realizes that one of the most difficult times to Honor the Game is when the opponent is not, and s/he reminds the players to live up to their own highest standard (respect for self).

Ultimately, a Positive Coach demonstrates integrity and would rather lose than win by dishonoring the game.

Not going to lie after I read that it pretty much sent shivers down my spine. Even if no one else cares, I do. I hope to be the best volunteer/soccer mom that I can be and heck I see all that as applicable to parenting as well as coaching. Go Bronco and Go Cougars :)

Go Mighty Cougars

Now begins my week of nausea....BYU plays Utah this upcoming Saturday. YIKES This game always makes me nervous!

This weekend the Cougars won in both Men's Basketball and Football. On Friday night the Basketball team played Long Beach St. and we pulled it out in the end. It was close until the end when we pulled away. Jimmer didn't play all that well, I believe he only had 6 points, but Lee Cummard had pretty much the game of his life! He was 13 of 15, 3 for 3 at the 3 point line, a whole bunch of rebounds and assists as well. Good thing Lee is a stud this year! I think Miles will fill in nicely where Plaisted left off. So here are pictures!
Look Closely and you'll see Grandma Grandpa and the Gundred gang. They were sitting across the way from us. We were waiting to get in and Jason was playing with his cars on the floor. Sierra was very good at the game, she watched for a little bit as well. Will always had a close eye on her. :)
Matt doesn't like being distracted to take pictures during the game...
There is Suzanne!
Jason was looking at Matt while I was trying to take the picture..... he has such funny faces these days...

Saturday we watched the football game and I was really glad that BYU beat Air Force soundly. Again it was a close game at the beginning but because of a turnover on Air Forces part we were able to pull ahead after capitalizing on that mistake. We scored again after that as well to put the game away.

Sunday we went to church where Matt taught the Men in Elders Quorum. I teach next week on President Monsons talk given last October. After church we were signed up for Tithing Settlement, so we stuck around and got home too late to head down to Grandmas house for her birthday. SORRY WE MISSED IT! Happy Belated birthday Grandma!
What and I thankful for this time? My sisters who put up with me when I am being a Brat and whom I put up with when they are being Brats... you just gotta love it :)

Apples

Last night I made apple pie filling, man I appreciate those peeling coring slicing things that Kristin and Grandma have. I was so tired of peeling and coring and slicing by the end of the night. I had 8 Apples 2 different types, one type was granny smith the other type was fuji or gala I cant remember. Anyways Matt helped me get all the dry ingredients and I just did apples. It took for what seemed like forever and it only made 2 bags! I needed to get it done though because for Thanksgiving I am going to bake a Carmel Apple Pie and it is much easier to have as much done before hand as possible. Also I am making a Rich Heath Bar Cheesecake and I'll just buy a pumpkin pie for Matt. I don't even want to try and make that.

Today I am thankful for football gloves, funny thing to be thankful for, i know. Let me explain every year Matt gets all excited come November for football on Thanksgiving. I think he pretty much buys a new pair of cleats every year and a new pair of gloves. In years passed he hasn't actually bought football gloves he has just bought mechanics gloves or whatever was inexpensive. Well yesterday was the day that Matt got his first pair of really nice football gloves that he CLAIMS he will use more then once a year. We'll see how that goes he just might. But he was SO excited about them yesterday, he even called me to ask which ones he should buy so I could help him compare. I got home and he showed them to me very excitedly, then he got out the football to "test" them out. Thus, I am thankful for football gloves since they make my husband so happy.

Down Down

So not to dwell on gas prices but on my way home from work yesterday gas was $1.99, then this morning on my way to school it was $1.97. How low will it go??? If only tuition was the same way... down down, if only...

Tomorrow night at 7 BYU Basketball home opener are you ready for college basketball season?? I sure am, Jimmer Fredette for president!

Thankful

YEP, Yesterday I filled up the Malibu and it only cost 26.06. Gas by our house is down to 2.06. Man that is AWESOME! I was so excited I took a picture, I bet the people around thought I was crazy.

AHHHH the weekend

Yes I thoroughly enjoy the weekend! Friday we went down to Will and Kristin's and we were talking about how Matt cut his hair the night before then Kristin said, "Matt, Jason needs a hair cut will you cut it?" Matt said sure and up the stairs they went. Sierra tried to grab the fallign hair so Will had to hold her back. Jason was a wiggler and Matt said that it was the hardest haircut he ever did. He kept sayign its itchy! Itchy! Then he would arch his back. All and all it ended up well. When Jason was taking a bath afterwards all he kept yelling was THANK YOU MAAAATTT!!! Then Matt from downstairs would say YOU'RE WELCOME JASON!!!! All night that's how it went. Jason is such a polite little guy. I think Kristin was just happy she didn't have to do it.

Saturday was the football game. We won 41-12 not much of a contest, now we'll see how it goes against Air Force. They beat CSU soundly and we squeaked by sooo we'll see! My parents were also here all weekend, its always nice to have the parents around. After the game we went out for burgers with the Gundred gang then we went back to Kristin and Wills to watch "Journey to the Center of the Earth" we didn't have any 3-D glasses so Matt, Suzanne and later, Kristin decided to react anyways to what should be 3-D. It was pretty funny. The movie was really cheesy but Matt and Suzanne REALLY want to see it with the glasses on.

Sunday we went to church and (we all knew it was coming) I was called to teach in Relief Society. I guess it's okay I only have to teach one Sunday a month, 12 times a year eh not bad at all.

After church we went (yep you guessed it) BACK down to Will and Kristin's to celebrate Will and Sierras birthday. (Gas is $2.08 by our house :) We had yummy chicken and REALLY good 3 layer chocolate cake! (Hey it was a birthday party!) Sierra wasn't feeling well, before dinner I held her for about 30 minutes and she just laid there and stared at me. It was kind of cute, but sad, why do Kristin's kids always feel sick on their first birthday? We watched a couple episodes of "The big bang theory" which is hilarious and also recorded the family singing a Christmas song for the missionaries in the ward back home. Maybe Kristin will post it, it was pretty funny.

Anyways back to real life only a few more weeks to go until school is over, I can do it....

What am I thankful for today?? Well I am trying to be thankful for school, I love learning new things but at 7:30 in the AM, up at the U, it's getting pretty exhausting! SO the real thing I am thankful for? LAVELL EDWARDS STADIUM, even though we had horrible seats this year (next year we are sitting with you mom and dad) it was still awesome to go to every home game and watch BYU go undefeated at home for the 3rd year in a row. :)

Utah won?

So Utah beat TCU last night, just barely. I was ehh about the game. In fact it was down right boring to listen too, the score should reflect how boring it was. Although it did come down to the last minute and Utah finally scored their first touchdown. I am glad they won so that we still have a chance at a shared MWC championship but I am not going to lie I didn't want either team to win. I hear it was a dang cold night last night there at Rice Ecceles Stadium. Which leads me to talk about what I am thankful for....Heat!

I am grateful that I can just go upstairs and push a button to turn up the heat in my home. It gets very cold in the winter and I can just go inside, yes it costs money BUT I still have the opportunity to have heat unlike most in the world. I am spoiled! :)

I forgot!, Sorry those who read my blog earlier you missed it,
My mom e-mailed pictures of the new TV and entertainment center that my dad built. (it was her first time ever e-mailing pictures herself with out a teenagers help)
CAN YOU TELL MY PARENTS ARE GETTING OLD? They were having a hard time seeing the itty bitty TV they used to have (i think it was in the 30 something range) So instead of glasses no... we'll just go get a 65 inch TV. HAHA Okay I am kidding about the old thing but I think my mom said the entertainment center is about 7 feet tall! That is one hefty piece of furniture!

Today

First of all KUDOS TO WILL! Planning out the lunch to Tucanos for Kristin, I bet she loved that! That's awesome that Holly could help out. :) I was seriously impressed :)

Second I am home today not working or going to school, have you ever hit a wall where you think "I am tired of running around in circles like a chicken with my head cut off" and your body says "yeah I AM tired..." Matt set the alarm this morning for 5 something and I never got up, so I missed my first class... I am not feeling well! Good news is there is only about 4 weeks left of the semester then we get our holiday break, I can do it! Oh and note to self don't sign up for such early classes next semester!

This leads me to what I am thankful for today, My bed!!! So warm and cozy, especially if Matt just got out and I can scoot over to his side and take up the WHOLE bed. Ask Suzanne about that and her California KING all to herself. Anyways, When I go on vacation that is the #1 thing I miss while I am gone. If I could take it with me I could stay on vacation forever.

Have a happy day and go Red Box "Get Smart", you'll get some good hard laughs! Reminds me of the days when we were kids at the Kullicks :)

So much to be Thankful for.....

It's a Josh Groban song, I wouldn't end a sentence in for... like he did.

I have been thinking a lot about what I am thankful for this month all ready and I think for the rest of this month every post I have I am going to write a sentence or two about what I am thankful for and I encourage others to do it as well on their posts.

What am I thankful for today you wonder? It's an easy one to guess.

It is Matt!

In the almost decade that I have known Matt he has changed from night to day. As most of you know, he didn't make the best of choices in high school socially, academically, etc etc and was falling a little of the deep end. He didn't know where he wanted to go, what he wanted to do, or even IF he could do anything at all. I, who have always stayed in very shallow water, was able to help him away from the deep end and come on back to the clear shallow water. Now it wasn't me that made him change in the least, it was all his decision. My parents can attest and I know this because it took a VERY long time for this change to occur. I think I saw him for having more potential then he ever thought he had at the time. After high school, he served a mission and to be honest I still don't think he quite "got it" while he was out there. Don't get me wrong he came a long way but not as far as I would have liked. It took a year and a half off his mission for him to finally ask me to marry him. In between that year and a half he was really starting to understand his potential, who he could be with NO limitations. Now, after we were married he has just sling-shotted himself forward with life: socially, academically, spiritually, and mentally. It is just amazing the man he is today.

He doesn't settle for poor grades in the least and studies harder in one semester then he did for all of high school combined. He really values and LOVES all his family (my family too) and understands why they are so important. He LOVES learning new things at church and is more then happy to discuss them with me and share his spiritual experiences with me, and mentally he is sharp. He has always been extremely quick witted, but by sharp I mean willing to listen to others and learn from them. He is willing to take suggestions or advice no matter if they are older or younger then him, and he is more aware of what is going on around him then he ever has. He is more methodical in his decisions and realizes that every decision he makes WILL effect someone else no matter what it is, nothing is his own anymore (Contrary to what he thought in years passed). He no longer has to try it out for himself but he can take someones word for it and not do it.

Here is what made me think of all this. A few days ago I was struggling with some homework for my drawing class, I am horrible at drawing. I was falling behind on my homework because of it and for the first time EVER Matt was SO kind to me and sat with me for about 2 hours and helped me with MY homework. In years passed it was ALWAYS the other way around. I threw my pencil down a couple times and gave up in frustration but he was kindly persistent with me to help me finish it. I felt so relieved that it was done and I was so glad that Matt had the patience to sit with me and do it. Also, I was happy that my weaknesses are his strengths. Some of them he didn't have to work on like drawing, he and his mother were both excellent drawers. But last night Ryan asked Matt for help with his Math homework. This is another weakness of mine, Math. Matt has taken it upon himself to get VERY good at Math, he has re-taken almost every math class he ever took to get a better grade not settling for a c+ or b-. Yes that has taken him a long time in college but now he knows it like the back of his hand. Matt sat down with Ryan for a few hours and pretty much re-taught Ryan how to do it, like he did with himself. At the end Ryan understood and Matt said he was glad that he could help and refresh his mind, then he started on his own homework. WHAT? Could you have Imagined Matt saying or doing that 8 no wait even 4 years ago? I think not.

So that is what I am so very thankful for today (and everyday), my hard working, understanding, kind, intelligent husband who only wants the best for his family and himself. No more settling or falling short for anything.

I tell you though everyday I just want to say "I told you so" to him... I knew he would be this way all along I just had to wait for him :) I guess that's why they say the best things in life are worth waiting for, he is my diamond in the rough and is still constantly perfecting and polishing himself.

Happy Thanksgiving month all! :)

Pandora

Let me let you all in on a little secret of mine, its called Pandora... say it with me Pandora.... Its a music website, but not your average music website. Its completely free! All you do is type in an artists name or a song that you like and it will formulate a play list based on that song or artist you chose. Now you say, what if I don't like a certain song or artist? On each song you have the option of giving the thumbs up or thumbs down to each song, thumbs down and they will never play it again. Say you have quite an eclectic taste in music? Create many play lists and add them together, as a quick mix. I listen to Pandora everyday at work and a lot of times at home. Pandora.com and heck type in a Christmas song title and you have your own Christmas music station! I for one haven't done that quite yet, my husband isn't too fond of the holiday music this early. Anyways, next time you want to listen to music flip on the computer and go to Pandora.com its a wonderful world of music and harmony :)

Halloween Time

Friday was excellent fun! That day for work I was able to work from home! I LOVE that every other Friday. I went to Wal-mart to pick up some decorations for my cupcakes and they all ready had a CHRISTMAS TREE UP! I laughed really hard while walking into the store... its Halloween people! Anyways so I was able to make special Halloween cupcakes for the models and bring them over. My Boss Jeff and another sales agent Catrina got to enjoy them along with a few of the Head construction guys. I got home and started getting ready, man alive I tell ya it's hard to move around with a big huge puffy Dress on! I went and bought some special gold ribbon for my hair but I couldn't figure out how to get it in there so I had to forget the ribbon. We headed down to the Maxwell's house and enjoyed yummy soup and I ate WAY
too much chocolate. I even ate a Charleston Chew I haven't had one of those in forever! Thanks for the Chocolate Maxwell's! We had all Disney at the party. Apparently Disney had a hand in star wars somehow, we had princess's, a pirate, a ladybug.... "A Bug life"? But that ladybug was a guy... (Sorry Seirra I didn't get a picture of you!) and a Minnie Mouse, it was fun! We hung out and played games while others went trick or treating. We actually had to cut out early because my husband made himself sick eating too much candy! Funny thing is when we were trying to figure out who Matt was for Halloween he said he was part of Beauty and the "Beach"... what a dork. Suzanne bought a house over the weekend and Linda and Cary bought her a house warming gift, you'll have to ask Suzanne on the story for that one. Linda thought it was really funny so did Suzanne....

That evening we went home and watched Lord of the Rings. I fell asleep promptly, we finished it on Saturday morning then we cleaned our house and headed down to Utah county. We went disc golfing, picked up some pizza, and went over to Grandma and Grandpas to watch the game on the MTN. The Cougars won... barely. It was a nail biter! I am tired of those, especially at the end of the season! That evening we watched more football and headed home. I have struggled with the time change and am DREADING it tomorrow when I have to be out the door by 6:20 AM. Wish me luck!
